The Bass Nation State High School Fishing Championship was held out of Doiron’s landing in Stephensville on Saturday. Teams could fish the Atchafalaya Basin or the Lake Verret side.

The team of Braden Blanchard and Cade Fortenberry took top honors fishing the Lake Verret side using spinner baits and soft plastics. The young pair from St. Amant High School worked the cypress trees with their selected lures and brought in a five-fish limit of 11.97 pounds.

Finishing in fifth place, also from St. Amant High School, was the team of Sam Bergeron and Rance Gautreaux. The boys used white and chartreuse Humdinger Willow Leaf Spinner baits on the cypress trees, as well, to bring in four bass that weighed 6.74 pounds. Their big bass weighed 2.52 pounds.

These two teams move on to the National Bass Nation State High School tournament in July on Kentucky Lake to compete for scholarships.

Other Ascension parish teams that participated in the tournament were Matthew Romano and Nathaniel Pierce, from St. Amant High School, along with Cody and Cam Gautreau, of Dutchtown High School.
