National Night Out set Tuesday

In an effort to showcase the community’s resolve against crime, Sgt. Joey Meyers said the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office is hosting its first National Night Out observance from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Public Safety Center, 12192 Airline Highway, Gonzales.

National Night Out is an annual event held across the country involving police departments, civic groups, community organizations, local governments and others, “showing criminals that residents are active in making their neighborhoods safe,” Meyers said.

Sheriff Jeff Wiley and his deputies, along with officers from other law enforcement agencies, will provide crime prevention information, he said.

Jambalaya and ice cream will be served.

Firefighter’s fundraiser

The Galvez-Lake Volunteer Fire Department is selling jambalaya and pastalaya lunches from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Delaune’s Do-It Center on La. 44.

Plates will be $5 and proceeds will be used to purchase equipment for the department.

Sorrento Primary opens

Sorrento Primary School’s Prep Day and dedication ceremony are set for Tuesday at the new school, officials announced.

Parents and students are encouraged to attend at their designated time and “use this opportunity to take care of assessment fees, purchase yearbooks, agendas and zipper bags, purchase sweatshirts and/or spirit shirts as well as meet their teacher and drop off school supplies,” Principal Robin Anderson said in a news release.

The school is aligning its Prep Day with the dedication ceremony and a School Board meeting, which will be held on the new school’s campus, 42211 N. City Parc Drive, Sorrento.

The public is invited to attend the 6 p.m. dedication ceremony, which will be followed by the School Board’s 6:30 p.m. meeting.

School supply drive

Volunteer Ascension’s school supply drive will wrap up on Saturday with its 14th annual School Tools Drive.

After a successful Stuff the Bus campaign that collected more than 52,000 school supply items, agency volunteers will mount a final push for supplies throughout the day at Walmart stores in Gonzales, Prairieville and Donaldsonville and the Office Depot in Gonzales.

“Your donations will go directly to assist needy Ascension Parish students in grades kindergarten through eight,” Volunteer Ascension Director Sherry Denig said.

In addition, the agency’s 10th annual School Uniform Program is coming to a close, as summer volunteers have collected, sorted and repaired recycled uniforms for distribution to students in need.

School uniforms will be distributed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Gonzales Primary School’s cafeteria. Distribution for Donaldsonville schools will take place at each individual school.
