Candidates chime in on issues _lowres


Former Ascension Parish School Board and Parish Council member Doug Hillensbeck is running for the District 7 seat on the Ascension Parish Council.

Hillensbeck, 61, Republican, said he has experience as a business owner, community volunteer and elected official and is concerned for the future of the parish.

Hillensbeck said he was active in the parent-teacher organizations at his children’s local schools, serving two terms as PTO president at Prairieville Middle School.

He said his experience as president of Kelly Pest Control, established in 1980, gives him the fiscal conscientiousness as a business owner that will be needed on the Parish Council as its navigates the future.

He served in the U.S. Army with the Louisiana National Guard as a lieutenant colonel for 31 years and served for 13 years on the Ascension Parish School Board and Ascension Parish Council.

He was a Boy Scout leader for 22 years, founded and helped coach the Prairieville Broncos Youth Football Organization and refereed and coached in the Ascension Youth Basketball Association.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Florida State University.

“Ascension Parish government doesn’t have a revenue problem; it has a spending problem,” he said.

He said he plans to implement balanced impact fees for new developments, correct drainage and traffic-flow distress around the core Prairieville-Dutchtown-Galvez community, continue the acquisition of recreational parks using existing parish-owned lands and build inter-council partnerships.
