Wreath deadline extended
The Ascension Veterans Association has extended the deadline for Wreaths Across America to Friday.
Call Tanya Whitney at (225) 612-0805 to purchase a wreath to be placed on a veteran’s grave as part of the nationwide program honoring deceased veterans during the holidays. Volunteers or families can place the wreaths. Donations also are being accepted to place wreaths on veterans’ graves.
Wreaths will be available at the Wreaths Across America ceremony at 11 a.m. Dec. 16 at Ascension Veterans Memorial Park in Gonzales.
The Kansas City Southern Holiday Express rolls into Gonzales at 4 p.m. Saturday on East Railroad near Ratcliff's Florist. No tickets are required.
The festive, six-car train will bring Santa Claus and his elves for free visits with the public, who can walk through three cars filled with holiday displays.

Ascension Parish Library is hosting a free seminar at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Gonzales Branch for those interested in starting a small business.
A senior business consultant with the Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southern University and A&M College-Baton Rouge will discuss the feasibility of business ideas and how to get a small business loan.

Lighting up Gonzales
Welcome the Christmas season with the city of Gonzales’s holiday light display at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Jambalaya Park. Visit with Santa Claus, enjoy jambalaya and watch entertainment by Center Stage Performing Arts Academy. Santa and his elves will be handing out toys to children.
The event will be held outdoors, weather permitting. It usually is held at the Gonzales Civic Center, which was unavailable due to last year’s flooding, city leaders said.
Christmas Crusade shopping
Volunteers are needed at 6:30 on Tuesday for the annual Christmas Crusade for Children shopping night at the Walmart store in Gonzales.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office hosts the night, during which it provides the money for volunteers to shop for Christmas gifts for area children. The Sheriff's Office held several collected donations from residents and businesses to support the program.
Circle Dec. 9 on the calendar for the 2017 Cumulus Kids and Family Christmas Expo at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center. Admission is free.
From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., families will enjoy a day of pictures with Santa, kids’ carnival rides, live music, more than 100 vendor booths, Disney princesses, giveaways, Scooby-Doo, Spider-Man, Dora the Explorer, bounce houses, face painting and more.
