Gonzales Primary School early childhood educator Ashley White recently brought the PreKinders Actors and Actresses project to her 3- and 4-year-old students through a grant provided by the Ascension Fund.

Students retold and acted out stories, nursery rhymes and fairy tales with puppet pieces and props, teaching the children to build their oral language skills and use their imaginations, a news release said.

White’s success was measured by Teaching Strategies Gold, an assessment tool that allowed her to take pictures, record videos and write notes for submission. The documentation then was scored using colored bands based on the characteristics of the retelling of the students.

The Ascension Fund, a nonprofit established in 1991 by the Gonzales Rotary Club, allows private sector leaders to invest directly in the work of individual teachers and schools through grants for innovative ideas and programs in Ascension Parish public schools, a news release said.
