Gonzales resident Shirley Bourque was honored with the proclamation of June 16 as Shirley Bourque Day in Ascension Parish.

Parish President Kenny Matassa read the proclamation aloud during the Parish Council meeting in Gonzales. Matassa presented the proclamation to Bourque and named her honorary parish president for the day.

Bourque’s five children, including Gonzales City Councilman Neal Bourque, and various family members were in attendance for the proclamation. Her family includes 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren with one more on the way.

Bourque is the daughter of Vic Mire, a former Ascension Parish sheriff. She owned Gonzales’ first beauty shop, Shirley’s Beauty Shop, which opened in 1948. She and her husband also owned Bourque Real Estate, which developed seven subdivisions in Gonzales from 1956 to 1983.
