State Rep. Johnny Berthelot, R-Gonzales, recently received the Louisiana Fire Chiefs Association’s 2016 Legislator of the Year award, presented by association President Mark Stewart and Chief Jacques Picou, at the association’s annual conference in Baton Rouge.

The association was organized in 1973 to promote the fire service profession, improve methods of fire prevention, training, protection and extinguishment and to maintain high standards of professional ethics among fire service officers, a news release said.

“It is an honor to receive this award from such a noble organization. Fire safety is important to all of us, and representing these service men and women has been a pivotal part of my job here in the Legislature,” Berthelot said.
