The National Catholic Education Association named Andrew Bertrand the 2013 NCEA Catholic Elementary School Distinguished Graduate for St. Theresa Middle School.

Bertrand, the son of Frank and Brenda Bertrand, graduated from St. Theresa in 1982, and his sister, Stacey, graduated in 1983. He graduated from Ascension Catholic High School, and he was an honor graduate of the University of Louisiana-Monroe College of Pharmacy.

Bertrand and his wife, Jeanne Bertrand, have three children: Victoria, who graduated from St. Theresa and St. Michael High School and is now enrolled in LSU; Blake, who also graduated from St. Theresa and is now a senior at St. Michael High School; and Brandt, who is at St. John Primary.

Sponsored by NCEA’s Department of Elementary Schools in cooperation with St. Theresa Middle School, this award goes to Bertrand for outstanding personal and professional achievements, a news release from the school said.

Throughout his life, Bertrand has been an example of how Catholic schools educate people to take leadership roles in their community and beyond, the release said.

Bertrand is the owner of Bertrand’s Pharmacy in Gonzales, a family-run pharmacy established by his father more 40 years ago. The business works with local churches to help community members in need of medication. Bertrand is involved in many community organizations such as the Lions Club, Rotary Club and the Capital Area and the Louisiana State Pharmacist Associations.

Bertrand’s family attends St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church and Bertrand is a member of the school’s finance committee.

“As a graduate of St. Theresa of Avila School and Ascension Catholic High School, I feel that I was both academically and spiritually prepared for college and my professional career,” he said. “I hope to instill these values in my children through the same opportunities with Catholic education.”

Founded in 1904, the association’s membership represents more than 200,000 Catholic educators serving 7.6 million students in Catholic elementary and secondary schools, in religious education programs, in seminaries, and in colleges and universities.
