September is Suicide Prevention Month in Ascension Parish.

Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez made the proclamation at a Parish Council meeting on Aug. 20, a news release said.

Martinez presented the proclamation to the Ascension Counseling Center’s executive director, Suzanne Hamilton, and Dawnyelle Bennett.

On average, there are five suicides in Ascension Parish every year, Hamilton said. Overall, it is estimated that for each adult who died from suicide, there are 20 others who made suicide attempts.

Statistics show suicide is the 11th-leading cause of death in Louisiana, the release said.

Anyone seeking counseling can call Ascension Counseling Center intake coordinator Sarah Cuti at (225) 450-1158. The center is at 1112-A E. Ascension Complex Blvd. in Gonzales.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is (800) 273-8255.
