The Cajun Country Quilters Guild, an organization of quilters dedicated to charitable works and education of its members, held its monthly meeting at 10 a.m. on March 10, at First Baptist Church, 1217 S. Burnside Ave., Gonzales.
The guild, which meets on the second Thursday of each month, elected new officers: Shannon Bowen, president; Sherry Herringshaw, vice president for a second term; Elena Acosta, secretary; Kay Olinde, treasurer; and Pamela Day, public relations, a news release said.
In 2015, the Cajun Country Quilters Guild donated 13 quilts to Ascension Family Services and has donated 88 quilts since 2010. The guild has also donated many quilts to local churches, fire departments and charitable organizations benefitting displaced families and quilted coverlets for the isolettes at Ochsner Medical Center off O’Neal Lane in Baton Rouge.
The guild is selling tickets for an opportunity to win a custom quilt made by its members called the Starring Fleur de Lis. Tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5. The money raised will go to buy more material to make quilts to donate to charities in our community, especially those benefitting displaced families and children. The drawing will be held May 11, 2017, at Cottage Creations and Quilts in St. Gabriel.
The guild’s next meeting is Thursday, April 14, beginning at 9 a.m. On May 12, the guild will be putting on a paper piecing class that day taught by Sherry Herringshaw, who is certified to teach quilting classes through Gulf Coast Quilters Association. The cost of the class is $10 for Cajun Country Quilters to attend.
If you are interested in quilting or purchasing tickets for an opportunity to win the custom Starring Fleur De Lis quilt, please join the guild at its next meeting or call Pamela Day at (225) 955-1244.
