COEA-The Arc of East Ascension is having a Family Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Center Based Respite Center, 1212 Purpera Road, in Gonzales.

The event, which will include games, music and food, is designed to celebrate March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

The mission of The Arc of East Ascension is to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families through service and advocacy that support choice, independence and dignity, a news release said.

The Arc of East Ascension, also know as Community Opportunities of East Ascension, the oldest and largest nonprofit in Ascension Parish, was founded in 1964 by a group of parents of children with developmental disabilities, the release said.

The concerned parents came together in an effort to find an alternate route for educating their children and to develop meaningful activities for them to be a part of. The group quickly grew into a thriving agency, well known as the primary resource for families in need of support for their child or family member with developmental disabilities.

The agency, which operates a center at 1122 E. Ascension Complex Blvd., offers an adult day training program, supported independent living assistance, respite services and senior services.
