The Galvez-Lake Volunteer Fire Department brought toys and food to area families in need during the holiday season.

Each year, the volunteers collect canned goods, toys and monetary donations for less-fortunate families in the community. This year, the volunteer members built a sleigh for Santa and his elves to ride on as they caroled throughout the community Dec. 3-18, said Sherri LeBourgeois, department reporter.

Santa visited neighborhoods, giving each child a candy cane. Even the pups received a doggie treat, she said.

Through their efforts, the volunteers collected and donated 3 tons of food, four truckloads of toys and $1,300.

More than 22,50 candy canes were distributed.

The sleigh also received second place in the Civic/Religious Division of the 2014 Gonzales Christmas Parade.
