Center hosts trials in dog obedience

Dogs will take over the Lamar-Dixon Center on Saturday and Sunday for the Louisiana Capital City Obedience Club’s annual obedience trials.

Obedience dogs from Ascension Parish, Baton Rouge and around the South will compete throughout both days in four rings as American Kennel Club judges score the entries.

The club teaches obedience classes for all ages, breeds and abilities year-round. The club provides training for obedience, agility, hunting, herding and therapy.

Summer sports taking registrants

Donaldsonville Youth Flag Football registration continues through Tuesday.

Boys and girls ages 5 to 13 can register at Lowery Middle School’s soccer field from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday.

The program starts June 1. The fee is $40 for the six-week program.

The flag football program is organized by Mark Peters, of Hope Youth Development.

Hope Youth Development also is hosting a summer tennis camp in Gonzales starting Wednesday.

The four-week tennis camp is for children ages 6 to 12.

Games will be played on the Gonzales Municipal Courts on Meylan Drive.

Grief support group meets at hospital

The Community Education Department of St. Elizabeth Hospital is offering a loss and grief education and support meeting Thursday and May 30 at the Gonzales hospital.

The free group meetings will be facilitated by the Grief Recovery Center and held at 6 p.m. in the hospital’s Sister Vernola conference room.

Football players, cheerleaders sought

Ascension Cougars Youth Football is holding registration for its football and cheerleading programs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 1 at Trinity AME Church, 1420 South Darla Ave.

Boys and girls ages 5 to 12 can register, Cougars organizer Leon J. Blouin III said.

Registration fees are $130 for football and $100 for cheerleading.

Woodcarver shares tips at seminar

David Oubre will share woodcarving tips during a May 30 presentation at the Ascension Parish Library in Donaldsonville.

Oubre, a member of the Pelican Woodcarvers Guild, will talk about designing wood, finishes, carving and sharpening tools.
