River Region Art Association’s Red Hot Art Show opens Friday at the Depot Gallery, 1008 W. La. 30, Gonzales.

Artists can enter paintings, drawings, photography, digital art and three-dimensional work from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The show will end Friday, July 31, with a public reception at 4 p.m. at the Depot Gallery.

Hot activities at libraries

Youth can find activities of all kinds at the Ascension Parish Library this summer:

Fans of the video game Minecraft can come to the Galvez Branch Library, 40300 La. 42, Prairieville, for a Minecraft Party at 2 p.m. Monday. Kids can defeat the creepers, play pin the tail on the pig and turn themselves into a Minecraft character.

“DIY Shoe Wings” is at 2 p.m. Monday at the Donaldsonville Branch Library, 500 Mississippi St., Donaldsonville. Tweens entering grades four through eight should bring a favorite pair of lace-up sneakers to customize.

Children entering grades two through five will get hands-on with the scientific method and experiments on static electricity and magnetism with “Mad Science.” It’s at 2 p.m. Monday at the Dutchtown Branch Library, 13278 La. 73, Geismar, and 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Galvez Branch Library.

Teens can transform their favorite selfie into a Roy Lichtenstein-inspired work of art at “Pop Art Portraits” at 5:30 p.m. Monday or test their comic book knowledge against other teens in a “Jeopardy”-style trivia game at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Both are at the Gonzales Branch Library, 708 South Irma Blvd.

“Comic Art Accessories” is at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Galvez Branch Library. Teens will create accessories inspired by retro comic book art and 8-bit characters.

NCBW meeting

The Greater Baton Rouge Region Chapter meeting of the National Congress of Black Women will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday in meeting room 2 of the East Baton Rouge Main Library, 7711 Goodwood Blvd.

Health talks planned

The Community Education Department of St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales has seats available for two upcoming classes:

  • “Passport to Health” with Charla B. Johnson, MSN, RN, ONC, will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, July 23, at the Donaldsonville Parish Health Unit Building, 901 Catalpa St., Donaldsonville. The topic is diet and high blood pressure. There is no charge to attend, and registration is preferred.
  • “Growing Up: Girls,” a class to help girls ages 9 to 11 and their moms understand the physical and emotional changes girls experience as they go through puberty, will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, in the Sister Vernola Conference Room at St. Elizabeth Hospital. The fee is $15, and preregistration is required.
