Ascension Parish planning and development workers moved into their work space inside the new parish governmental complex Friday.

The workers, who were formerly housed on Churchpoint Road outside Gonzales, are among the last to move into the $6.9 million building on East Worthey Road in Gonzales.

The building has been built on the site of the now demolished East Ascension Hospital, across the street from East Ascension High School.

Workers rolled in boxes, unpacked them and sent the empties to the trash bin Friday while contractors put the in finishing touches on the 33,500-square-foot building.

Parish officials hope consolidating workers under one roof will allow them to be more efficient and open up space for other departments at the Churchpoint building and for the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office at the former parish executive building on East Railroad Street.
