River Parishes Community College and CDL Certifiers have teamed up to launch a Commercial Driver’s License (or CDL) training and testing program through the college.

River Parishes provides the space, equipment, classes and administration, a news release said. CDL Certifiers, a private company, provides a specially-equipped tractor/trailer, teachers and examiners.

The courses are intended for novices and prepare students for entry-level employment in the transportation industry. The standard course lasts four weeks (160), but two- and three-week programs are under consideration. River Parishes plans to offer varying levels of classes to meet the requirements of students’ desired jobs or industry of interest.

The program will prepare students for CDL and CDL-A licenses. Good drivers can earn from $16 to $38 per hour or $35,000 to $72,000 annually, based on experience and the driving region, the release said.
