Youth Summer Reading Program 2013 Registration Begins: All library locations.

Law Enforcement Torch Run: 9:15 a.m., La. 44 between I-10 and La. 30. Members of local law enforcement agencies will carry the Louisiana Special Olympics torch through Gonzales, ending at U.S. 61 and La. 44 at about 10 a.m.

Writing Your Voice: 4:30 p.m., Ascension Parish Library, Donaldsonville. Teen Bloggers Make an Impact program.

Board Game Night: 6 p.m., Ascension Parish Library, Dutchtown.


Gonzales Library Closed: Ascension Parish Library in Gonzales closed.


Library Closed: All Ascension Parish Library locations closed for Memorial Day holiday.

Ascension Memorial Day Ceremony: 11 a.m., Ascension Veterans Park, 612 S. Irma Blvd., Gonzales. Keynote speaker will be Capt. Dennis Beaver, a retired member of the U.S. Navy and senior naval instructor at St. Amant High School. The ceremony will honor and commemorate members of the U.S. military who died while serving our country. Ceremonial events will include music from the Combined High School Choir, a rifle salute, casket ceremony and military honors from the various Ascension veterans organizations and the St. Amant High Naval Junior ROTC. The program is hosted by the Ascension Veterans Park Committee.

Alzheimer’s Lunch and Learn: noon, St. Elizabeth Hospital, Sister Linda conference room. A program on “Person-Centered Care: Why It Matters.” Join Barbara Anthony, registered nurse and volunteer with Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area, as she shares the importance of keeping the person with dementia as the center of care. Skin Cancer Screening: 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., St. Elizabeth Medical Plaza II, Suite 1040. In recognition of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, St. Elizabeth Hospital, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and Louisiana Dermatology Associates are partnering to offer free skin cancer screenings to anyone who has not had a skin cancer screening by a physician in the past 12 months. No appointment needed.
