The Ascension Veterans Associations is accepting applications for its fourth annual scholarship program, in honor of area Americans who have served and are serving in the military. The program emphasizes people accomplishing exemplary civic service and patriotic ideology.

A minimum of four scholarships worth $1,000 each are expected to be awarded for the 2018-19 academic year, a news release said. Previous applicants are eligible to reapply.

Applicants may be children, grandchildren or spouses of an honorably discharged veteran, current U.S. military service personnel or service personnel who was killed while serving in the military. Current stepchildren or step-grandchildren of an honorably discharged veteran or current U.S. military service member also are eligible to apply. There is a dependent child category for those who have an immediate family member who has served or is serving an honorably discharged veteran, such as a brother, sister, aunt or uncle.

Applicants must be residents of Ascension Parish, including those who may be attending school outside the parish, those who have graduated from a public or private Ascension school or current seniors at a public or private Ascension high school. Home-school students are eligible to apply. All candidates must have or had at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Current high school seniors can pick up an application packet from their local high school counselors. Anyone else interested in applying should email Scholarship Chairwoman Tanya Whitney at or call (225) 612-0805 or (256) 656-2124.

Applications must be postmarked no later than April 15.
