The St. Amant High School General Cooperative Education class of 2013 included 24 seniors gaining work experience before graduation.

The GCE class is a cooperative venture between St. Amant High and the community, providing students with class instruction and work opportunities.

On a daily basis, GCE combines classroom instruction with three or more hours of work experience, GCE coordinator Rae Broussard said.

“Those experiences are matched with a student’s ability, background and interests,” she said.

An individual training program is mutually agreed upon by the student, parents, teacher-coordinator and the employer.

The main goal of a cooperative education program is to help students develop knowledge and skills enabling them to become productive members of their communities and in the workforce, she said.

Students attend school half of the day and then head to work. Students must work 15 hours a week totaling 540 hours at the end of the year while also completing course work on taxes, laws in the workforce, customer service and human resources.

Employers in the community fill out evaluations on their GCE employee each quarter.

While in the class, 22 students became customer service certified by the National Retail Federation thanks to the Marketing Education Retail Alliance.

Broussard and three GCE officers organized a GCE luncheon earlier this month to show the GCE programs’ appreciation to the employers taking part in the program.

Taking part in the program were Kristy Peabody, Bridget Lambert, William King, Elise Normand, Jenna Gautreau, Brinsley Gautreau, Chelsey Lowery, Blaire Melancon, Kimberly Laiche, Alexis Jackson, Branson Bowen, Christa Laiche, Coleman Leake, Devin Britt, Breanne Vicknair, Mason Clouatre, Nicara Mcgowan, Destiny Bourgeois, Courtney Coulon, Alexis Bourgeois, Taylor Canter, Dana Gannon, Katy Coulton, Shelby Stone.
