The Gonzales Fire Department recently received a Life Safety Achievement Award from the National Association of Fire Marshals Fire Research and Education Foundation in partnership with Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company, a news release said.

Since 1994, the Life Safety Achievement Award has recognized local fire prevention efforts that have contributed to reducing the number of lives lost in residential fires, the release said.

The Gonzales Fire Department is one of 96 U.S. fire departments to record zero fire deaths in 2014 or to reduce fire deaths by at least 10 percent during the year. Award recipients must document active and effective fire prevention programs as well as a commitment to reducing the number of house fires in the community.
