The Griffins put out a great effort at home on Friday night but the No. 8 Zachary Broncos (4-1) scored a late fourth-quarter touchdown to win 44-34.
Dutchtown (3-2) gave up 15 early points but scored the next four times they touched the ball. Running back Fitell Bolding took to the ground and scored three times on runs of 12, 5 and 26 yards. Receiver Cornelius Washington added a 71-yard pass from Jared Sparks, and the Griffins held a 27-22 lead with only four minutes left in the third quarter.
The Broncos’ Lindsey Scott Jr. then led Zachary on an eight-play, 70-yard drive, and the Broncos took a 30-27 lead with a 15-yard pass to Shyron White in the right flat with 52 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
After the Broncos forced the Griffins to punt, they drove 77 yards in five plays to pull ahead 37-27.
The Griffins then drove 80 yards in eight plays as Sparks really stood out, completing four passes in the drive that was culminated with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Bolding that cut the Broncos’ lead to 37-34.
Then Zachary put the nail in the coffin with a 70-yard drive. The Griffins held the Broncos to a fourth and one, but Scott made the first down, and three plays later, he scored on a 65-yard run.
Bolding ran 11 times for 64 yards and had three catches for 24 yards. Averee York had seven catches for 109 yards, and Cornelius Washington had seven catches for 153 yards for the Griffins.
The Griffins travel to Broadmoor to take on the Buccaneers in a 5A District 5 season opener on Friday with kickoff at 7 p.m.
