Tanya Whitney, of Sorrento, placed in numerous events June 14 during the track and field meet for the Greater Baton Rouge Senior Olympics/District Games at Southern University in Baton Rouge.
The games are qualifying events for residents who wish to compete in the Louisiana Senior Olympic Games in October, a news release said. More than 500 athletes compete in competitive sports, including basketball, tennis, track and field, golf, archery, bowling, horseshoes, billiards, table tennis, weight lifting, swimming, ballroom dancing, pickle ball and more.
Whitney competed in five events and placed in all five events for her age group, 50-59. Whitney won first overall for the 50-meter and 100-meter dash, and first overall in the shot put competition, with a throw of 18.4 feet.
She placed third overall in the javelin competition, with a throw of 34.9 feet, and second overall in the discus throw competition, with a throw of 32.48 feet.
