The fight against cancer brings people from all walks of life to participate in the annual Relay for Life of Ascension Parish.

One of those fighters is event lead Jessica Dunnaway, who captains a family team named Mi-Mi Marchers. The team is named for Dunnaway’s mother, who lost her fight with breast cancer four years ago.

“Our family team has a mission to raise money to end cancer and help other families not experience what we did, as we honor the life of my mother and several other family members,” Dunnaway said.

“Raising money for Relay for Life is very important to our parish because it helps provide services and care for our residents of Ascension Parish,” she added. “(The American Cancer Society) provides hotel stays at the Hope Lodge free of charge, van rides to appointments, a 1-800 line that is staffed 24/7 and numerous other resources. These resources are provided at no cost to the patients and residents of our parish. There are many reasons for why I relay, but the most important one is to honor the life of my mother.”

This year’s Relay for Life of Ascension Parish is at 3 p.m. March 10 at Cabela’s in Gonzales. To participate or make a donation, visit
