The Senior Robotics Club from St. Theresa Middle School in Gonzales participated in the First Lego League Qualifier at Scotlandville Pre-Engineering Magnet Academy in Scotlandville on Nov. 14.
Teams from area schools competed in the categories of robot design, robot performance, project and core values. St. Theresa won the trophies for robot performance and overall champion.
This year’s theme was “Trash Trek.” Students identified a problem with the way we make or handle trash, then designed a solution. St. Theresa chose the way a school handles trash: specifically paper, cardboard, plastic and aluminum cans.
To promote recycling at school, the team organized “Recycle Wars,” in which grade-level competition was established with students bringing in paper, cardboard, plastic and aluminum cans for two weeks. The effort also looked around the school campus to improve recycling. Recycle Wars wrapped up with a pep rally where students from different grade levels competed in a water bottle relay and recycle-sorting competitions, topped off with a recycle-themed cheering competition.
The seventh grade won the competition, bringing in 897.3 pounds of recycling materials. Overall, St. Theresa students recycled 2,845 pounds.
The Senior Robotics Club also made a presentation before the Ascension Parish Council on Nov. 5 about the importance of recycling. The team plans to meet with area schools to promote further recycling efforts.
