Registration starts at 10 a.m. Saturday for Volunteer Ascension’s summer ConnecTeens program.

Youths ages 12 to 17 can register and find out more information about the program during a meeting at the Ascension Parish Library’s Gonzales branch.

ConnecTeens matches young volunteers with areas of need throughout the parish.

The program was developed to provide volunteer opportunities to parish youth in order to foster an ethic of community service that will last a lifetime, Volunteer Ascension Executive Director Sherry Denig said.

In its 14th year, ConnecTeens partners with local organizations to provide opportunities with the Special Tuesday Program, the Ascension Parish Library, Fellowship Center, Salvation Army, Volunteer Ascension’s School Tools and School Uniforms programs and other programs and events, she said.

“It’s a proven fact that kids that volunteer at a young age are more likely to sharpen the many skills needed to be our leaders of tomorrow,” Denig said. “In addition, simply put, it is what we are called to do … help others. This program is an avenue for kids to understand, explore and enjoy that privilege.”
