Four Ascension Parish high school students took part in Saturday’s Louisiana Music Educator Association’s All-State Honor Choir performance.
The honor choir is made up of the top 20 students from each voice part. In order to be accepted, students go through two auditions, St. Amant Choir Director Bryan J. Bertucci said.
Ascension Parish singers included Jonah Howell, Peyton Haynes, Sarah Sonnier and James Vercher. Howell, Haynes, and Sonnier are students at Dutchtown High School and Vercher is a student at St. Amant High School.
Singers performed under the direction of composer and director David Brunner. At the concert, Brunner stressed the importance of arts education, Bertucci said.
Also present at the concert was Nancy E. Ditmer, president of the National Association for Music Education. Before the concert, Ditmer explained that the singers on stage were more likely to have both higher standardized testing scores and grade-point averages as a direct result of participating in music, Bertucci said.
Howell, Sonnier and Vercher were also recognized as Academic All-State singers for having cumulative grade-point averages above a 3.5, he said.
