The St. Amant High School cross country boys and girls teams kick off their season Sept. 6 at Highland Park in Baton Rouge.

Coaches report that this year, both teams are young with many new faces.

The Lady Gator runners have two returning seniors, Erin Cain and Ariel Ballard, both four-year runners. Three other returners from last year are sophomores Jillian Parks, Cristina Colon and Madeline Lato. Returner Lorelei Gaffney, All Metro Honorable Mention last year, is hampered by injury this year and likely will be unable to compete, coaches said.

Rounding out the team are first-year runners Katelyn Buhler, Kayla Gonzalez, Raquel Gonzalez, JayLynn Martin, Valentina Nunez, Gabrielle Quebedeaux and Alyssa Swindell.

The 2014 boys team has doubled in size from last year’s group. Returning seniors are Erik Atkinson, Joshua Averett, Gatlin Matherne and Joshua Colon. Senior Kolby Kunefke, who missed last year due to injury, also is back. Senior Matthew LeMaire joins the team this year.

Other returners from last year include Trevor Serpas, James McCormack and Nathaniel Carmouche.

First year runners are Logan Byars, Adam Diaville, Richard Donaldson, Austin Duhe, Brier Babin, Michael Hinojosa, Blake LaBauve, Jarious Mingo, Austin Parent, Garrett Parks, Eber Rivas, Matthew Rosendale, Beaux Roy, Jordan Schmidt and Theo Swindell.

Coach Tanya Whitney decided to change up practice a bit Friday with the ALS ice bucket challenge.

Whitney said it took three ice chests to drench the teams.
