River Parishes Community College will offer daytime and night adult education programming in Ascension Parish beginning in September, school officials said.

The adult education programming will focus on preparation for the high school General Education Development test and on job readiness, according to a news release from the Sorrento community college.

RPCC will offer adult education programs in Sorrento and Donaldsonville, the release states. RPCC will offer classes in Sorrento at the RPCC-Technical Education Center, 9697 Airline Highway, and at the Donaldsonville Opportunity Center, 1201 Maginnis Street.

The college is working with the Ascension Parish School Board to transition the Adult Education Program as seamlessly as possible, said Nicholas Ory, a spokesman for the college.

The administrative change is the result of Louisiana Senate Bill 297, which was passed during the 2010 session, Ory said. The legislation transferred adult education responsibilities from the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to the Louisiana Community and Technical College System to better facilitate the transition from adult education programming to two-year postsecondary institutions, Ory said.

The college will accept applications for adult education and schedule placement tests for two weeks from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning Aug. 22 and ending Sept. 2. During those two weeks, Ory said, RPCC will collect applications and schedule placement tests at RPCC-TEC in Sorrento on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and at the Donaldsonville Opportunity Center in Donaldsonville on Thursdays and Fridays.

New student orientation and classes in Sorrento begin on Sept. 6, and in Donaldsonville on Sept. 8.

Currently, RPCC and the School Board staff members are responding to program questions and any other concerns prospective applicants may have, he said.
