ConnecTeens members have been fanning out all over Ascension Parish this summer, said Sherry Denig with Volunteer Ascension.

Now in its 14th year, the program has grown fairly steadily, Denig said, with about 65 teens ages 12 to 17, completing service hours throughout the parish.

“From playing games with special-needs kids and visiting with the elderly at our nursing homes, to helping out with projects at our local libraries, River Region Art Association, Salvation Army and The Fellowship Center, our ConnecTeens can be found serving all over Ascension Parish,” Denig said. “We partner with many local agencies that need a helping hand, and that’s just what our kids are able to provide during their summer break.”

But teens aren’t the only volunteers working with the organization this summer, she said.

The School Tools program is in its 18th year, and will be packing school buses with school supplies for Ascension Parish’s children on July 17 and 19, Denig said.

The two-day drive will begin with “The Corporate Challenge” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 17, when San Francisco 49er Glenn Dorsey, who also played football at LSU and East Ascension High, challenges all local businesses to collect as many school supplies as possible for drop-off in the Eatel Parking lot on East Worthy Road in Gonzales.

“That’s very exciting. We are delighted to have Glenn on board with our School Tools event,” she said.

On July 18, the drive opens up to the general public, and volunteers will collect supplies in front of the Donaldsonville and Gonzales Wal-Mart locations from 8 a.m. to noon, Denig said.

The school uniform drive, now in its 15th year, began June 15 at Central Middle School, and will continue through the last week in July, when all the collected uniforms and school supplies will be packed up and sent to schools in the parish, she said.

Volunteers are needed to collect, sort, wash and fold the uniforms on Mondays and Wednesdays at the school, Denig said.
