Polar Plunge

Special Olympics Louisiana is raising money Saturday at its annual Polar Plunge at Cabela's lake in Gonzales.

Volunteers, many in costumes, will jump into the lake to raise money for Special Olympics. Food and raffle tickets will be on sale. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m.

Paint it purple

The American Cancer Society invites the community to “Paint the Town Purple” for Relay for Life from Feb. 23 to March 10.

Purple is the signature color of the Relay for Life program. Businesses, organizations and individuals may display purple ribbons and other decorations in support of Relay for Life. Other suggested activities are swapping white light bulbs for purple ones, putting a purple bow on a mailbox or front door or organizing a day for people to wear purple at work or school.

Women’s conference

New Hopeful Worship Center Women’s Ministry is holding its inaugural women’s conference, Fearfully & Wonderfully Made, at 7 p.m. nightly Thursday to Saturday.

Bishop Xavier D. and Lady Schantia Madison will serve as hosts. The keynote speaker is the Rev. Debra Williams, of Mobile, Alabama, speaking Thursday and Friday night. Other speakers include minister Naisha Cooper, of Baker, on Friday and prophetess Shanika Stewart and minister Shuntay Thomas, both of Baton Rouge, on Saturday.

SCORE-Baton Rouge offers free, onsite business counseling on Thursday afternoon at Ascension Parish Library’s Dutchtown Branch. Appointments are required.

Active or retired business owners and executives will share their expertise in the areas of business plans, financial forecasts, marketing and sales, legal and accounting, business insurance and bank loan package preparation. All sessions are confidential.

Open mic night

Teen singers, songwriters, poets and musicians are invited to share their talents during open mic night at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at Ascension Parish Library’s Dutchtown Branch.

Performers must be in grades six to 12 and should bring 10 minutes of material to share. Registration is not required.

Girls and puberty

St. Elizabeth Hospital’s Growing Up Girls class helps girls ages 9 to 11 and their moms understand the physical and emotional changes that accompany puberty. It’s at 9 a.m. Feb. 24 in the hospital’s Sister Vernola conference room.
