Louisiana first lady Supriya Jindal on Dec. 4 visited kindergarten classes at Lake Elementary School in St. Amant as part of her School Surprise program.
She was there to announce the award of classroom enrichment tools to the school’s six kindergarten classrooms.
The equipment was funded by the Supriya Jindal Foundation for Louisiana’s Children and the Verizon Foundation, a news release from the foundation said.
The Supriya Jindal Foundation decided to invest in hands-on tools for classrooms after speaking with teachers and principals to better understand the needs of classrooms in Louisiana, the release said.
The School Surprise program provides kindergarten classrooms with “center” related tools to aid in the education of young students.
The School Surprise program was created based on input from teachers about how to enhance the classroom environment. Kindergarten classrooms’ centers may need books for a reading center, 10 frame charts and counters for a math center, or magnets and weather charts for a science center. The program seeks to provide such hands-on interactive tools that teachers identify as integral to their kindergarten classrooms and their students’ success.
“Establishing a strong foundation for our students to build upon is so very important — we all want to ensure our students master the basics of reading, writing and math,” Jindal said. “Thus, the foundation has decided to award kindergarten classrooms with hands-on enrichment tools to further aid in our students’ mastery of core subjects.
“The foundation is proud to partner with the Verizon Foundation, who helped to make this award possible for Lake Elementary School. With hard work, we believe we have the opportunity to make a lasting and positive difference in education.”
Tyrone Rice, director of business sales, Houston/Gulf Coast Region with Verizon Wireless, said the donated classroom tools will support teachers as they develop lessons, engage students with hands-on learning experiences and set Lake Elementary students up for a successful future.
