A local veterans’ support group is collecting games, movies, toiletries, snacks and other items to send to the 160 area Louisiana National Guard 922nd unit troops serving in Kuwait.

Brent Gautreau with Ascension Veterans Association said his group is collecting the items until April 26.

Care packages containing various personal care, entertainment and food items will be packed on May 6 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Gonzales for shipment overseas, he said.

No homemade foods, chocolate or canned foods will be accepted. Tuna and chicken salad will be accepted in foil pouches or in ready-to-eat kits.

Protein powder and protein bars are among the top-requested items, a flier for the program states.

Also on the list are body wash, hair gel, combs, lip balm, bug spray, eye drops, sunflower seeds, beef jerky, nuts, computer flash drive, video games, and puzzles and word search books.

The group is also organizing an “Adopt A Troop Pen Pal” program.
