Ascension Parish residents interested in becoming a Master Gardener can apply for the Ascension Master Gardener Class of 2016.
The program is offered by the LSU Agricultural Center and is designed to recruit and train volunteers to help meet the educational needs of home gardeners.
Classes will be taught from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays from Aug. 22 to Sept. 27, with the exception of Labor Day.
Program participants receive 40 to 50 hours of training, including horticulture, plant science, pest control, organic gardening, fruit and nuts, lawn and turf grasses. Upon passing the final exam, participants must complete a minimum 40 hours of service by the end of the next calendar year to receive their official title of Louisiana Master Gardener, a news release said.
In subsequent years, Master Gardeners are required to volunteer a minimum of 20 hours and attend six hours of AgCenter-approved continuing education programming to maintain their title, the release said.
Program cost is $150. Applications must be submitted by July 15. Call (225) 621-5799 for an application or information.
