The Ascension Parish Library’s next series of story time programs for young children kicks off in October.

Four types of story times are offered based on the needs of the developing child, a news release from the library said.

Lap-sit story time focuses on the needs of babies from birth through crawling. The program introduces simple rhymes, songs and books to stimulate babies with rhythmic language and sensory stimuli, the release said. These story times are fast-paced and energetic to keep babies amused. A parent or caregiver must attend with their baby, the release said. Lap-sit story time will be at 10 a.m. Thursdays from Oct. 2 through Nov. 20 in Gonzales, 708 S. Irma Ave. and Dutchtown, 13278 La. 73, Geismar.

Toddler story time focuses on the needs of young children from walking through age 2. The program introduces new words and ideas to the learning child through simple books, rhymes and finger plays, the release said. A parent or caregiver must attend with their child. The program fosters a fun, positive learning environment for children, while allowing parents to pick up tips and techniques for reading to their children. Toddler story time will be at 10 a.m. Wednesdays from Oct. 1 through Nov. 19 at all library locations.

Preschool story time focuses on the needs of children ages 3 through 5. These story times include half-hour of stories, songs, poetry and active play. Adults do not have to attend as the goal is to help foster the preschooler’s independence, the release said. A preschool child must reach the age of 3 by June 4 in order to participate in this series. Preschool story time will be at 11 a.m. Wednesdays from Oct. 1 through Nov. 19 in Gonzales, Galvez, 40300 La. 42, Prairieville and Dutchtown.

Bilingual story time is for children of all ages who speak Spanish, English, or both. These story times are an interactive half-hour of stories, songs and finger plays in both English and in Spanish. The program will introduce Spanish speakers to the English language and introduce English speakers to the Spanish language, the release said. Parents are invited to attend Bilingual story time with their children. Bilingual story time will be at 11 a.m. in Gonzales on Oct. 2, 16, and 30 and Nov. 13.

Registration starts Sept. 17 and is required for all story times. Parents can register their child in advance by either calling or visiting the library.
