The annual Donaldsonville Area Chamber of Commerce Sunshine Festival is this weekend at the South Louisiana Fairgrounds in Donaldsonville, according to a news release from chamber member Allison Hudson.

The festival will feature food, music and carnival rides from Friday to Sunday, Hudson said.

The Avenue Cruisers, a Donaldsonville band, will play on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m.

With the festival comes another crowd favorite — the Seafood and Wild Game Cook-off, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

In recognition of election season, the festival will add a cooking contest just for elected officials, Hudson said — the Hot and Spicy Political Cook-off, which will also be on Sunday.

The entry fee for both cook-offs is $100, and the deadline to sign up is Thursday.

Proceeds for the event will support the work of the Donaldsonville Area Chamber of Commerce.

The first Sunshine Festival was held in 1984 to benefit the Donaldsonville Fire Department. The inaugural festival, sponsored by a group of residents, featured a car race, according to the chamber’s website.

Through the years, the festival has undergone several changes, but has worked to keep its family-friendly atmosphere, Henderson said.
