Relay For Life of Ascension will kick off April 20 at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center with a special Survivors Lap featuring residents who have survived cancer.

Survivors will join together to take relay’s opening lap, “unified in victory and hope,” while the rest of the event’s participants surround the track to cheer them on,” Casey Walker, local volunteer coordinator, said in a news release.

Relay For Life is a grass roots fundraising event in which residents and teams of participants walk around a track overnight to celebrate the lives of those who have faced cancer, remember loved one lost, and commit to fight back against the disease, she said.

The money raised through Relay For Life supports the American Cancer Society’s efforts used for research and programs.

Cancer survivors can call the American Cancer Society at (225) 767-4557 or visit to register.

Several fundraising event are under way, Walker said.

Anyone interested in purchasing a memorial luminaria or Torch of Hope can call Walker at (225) 571-1745 or Lindsay Turner at (225) 287- 5177.
