Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez and members of the Ascension Republican Women organization announced the winners of the fifth annual Veterans Day Poster Contest during the Nov. 20 Parish Council meeting.

The contest was sponsored by ARW, and the winners received certificates of excellence and cash prizes.

Martinez presided over the ceremony while Stacey Cooper, ARW treasurer, and Joyce LaCour, ARW contest coordinator, presented the prizes to the students.

For the past five years, ARW has sponsored the Veterans Day Poster Contest in Ascension middle and high schools. The contest gives students an opportunity to express their thoughts on the significance of Veterans Day.

The five winners are sixth-grade students at St. Amant Middle School, where Amy Braud and Michelle Causey are the social studies teachers. Braud said she strives to teach her students the significance of holidays throughout the year and that the poster contest is a welcome vehicle to accomplish this.

“In the past, we have awarded four prizes,” LaCour said. “This year, because Parish President Tommy Martinez generously donated money for an extra prize, we added the ‘President’s Choice’ award.”

Winners included:

President’s Choice: Aubrey Odell, $125 grand prize.

First Place Poster Contest: Madison Deslatte, $100.

Second Place: James Mclin, $75.

Third Place: Juliet Davis, $50

Honorable Mention: Reagan Rivere, $25.
