Cancer survivors are encouraged to take part in the opening ceremonies of the Relay for Life of Ascension fundraiser set for May 2 at Cabela’s in Gonzales.

A survivors lap featuring area residents who have defeated cancer kicks off the event.

Relay For Life is a grassroots fundraising event in which individuals and teams in nearly 5,100 communities nationwide walk around a track overnight to celebrate the lives of those who have faced cancer, remember lost loved ones and commit to fight back against the disease, a news release said.

The money raised through Relay For Life supports the American Cancer Society’s efforts to find cancer cures.

Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during relay.

Cancer survivors can register for the survivors lap and a free T-shirt by calling (225) 767-4557 or visiting www.RelayFor Life.org.
