Ascension Parish resident Celeste Trichel Goodwin received Our Lady of the Lake College’s 2015 Franciscan Impact Award on Oct. 10 at the college’s annual luncheon recognizing leaders in the community.
The award was presented by Monica Griffith-Braud.
Goodwin was chosen by a committee based on her work in local communities to advocate and educate on hypertension in children and the need for increased screenings.
After nearly losing her son, Matthew, in 2007 to undiagnosed hypertension, Goodwin founded the National Pediatric Blood Pressure Awareness Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit, to bring attention to pediatric hypertension. Matthew, now 13, continues to serve with his mother as an advocate while battling hypertension and kidney disease.
Goodwin currently serves on the hypertension guidelines subcommittee with the American Academy of Pediatrics to review and revise current guidelines for addressing pediatric hypertension.
