CLINTON - East Feliciana Parish sheriff’s deputies said Wednesday a Norwood man arrested in the theft of a firearm is also accused of burglarizing a sawmill’s new office three times this year and burning down the old office in August.
Sgt. Kevin Garig said George E. Brown Jr., 24, 11951 Stewart Lane, is believed to have broken into Barnes Lumber Co. on La. 422 near Norwood three times since June 24 and stealing a truck in one of the break-ins.
Deputies later found the truck burned on Wadd Kent Road near Clinton, Garig said. During the investigation, deputies also were looking into the burglary of a house on Stewart Lane, which is near the sawmill, Garig said.
Detectives found more evidence when Brown was arrested Sunday on the firearms theft count, leading them to question him about the burglaries and the sawmill fire that was under investigation by deputies and the state Fire Marshal’s Office, Garig said. Brown admitted committing the burglaries and setting the fire, Garig said.
Deputies booked the suspect with theft of a firearm, three counts of simple burglary, two counts of simple arson, attempted simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling and theft of a vehicle, Garig said.
He remained in the parish jail Wednesday.
