Baker resident and McKinley High School band director Walter Perry, joined by a collection of young and old musicians, will present a holiday jazz concert, “A Winter Wonderland,” at 6 p.m. Dec. 28 at the Baker City Hall Park on Groom Road.
Sponsored by the Baker Heritage Museum Commission, the free family event will celebrate the holidays and the community. Local singers also will participate.
Doughnuts and towels
The Zachary Chamber of Commerce this week announced the winners of the annual Christmas parade on Dec. 15. The best marching group was Fitness Design for Women, “Duck Dynasty.” The Cooper Vet Angels Among Us, “Batteries Not Included,” won best riding group; Cub Scout Pack 46’s “Wilderness” was the best float; and Zachary United Methodist Church’s “The Flintstones” float won for the best display of the parade’s theme, “Famous Faces of Fact and Fiction.”
Georgia-Pacific’s throws and air-cannon shots of Brawny paper towels again proved to be a crowd favorite (no toilet paper this year, though), and Krispy Kreme doughnuts flying through the air (in boxes) added to the excitement.
West Feliciana Parish Emergency Operations Director Tommy Boyett reports that La. 966 will be closed, weather permitting, 1.3 miles east of U.S. 61 on the day after Christmas while a highway crew removes and replaces a cross drain. No vehicles will be able to pass the construction site.
The Zachary Community School Board recognized Zachary High School senior Elyxcus Anaya last week for having the winning art submission for this year’s district Christmas card. She was accompanied by her parents, Patricia and Antonio Gonzalez, at the board’s meeting. The design features a snow globe with a school bus approaching a little red schoolhouse.
Santa rides again
The Baker Fire Department will be giving Santa Claus a ride through neighborhoods on a firetruck Thursday and Friday nights from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The Thursday route covers all streets between Groom Road and Lavey Lane, from La. 19 to Sunshine Drive.
On Friday, Santa will visit all streets between Groom and Lavey, but between Seville Drive and Plank Road.
If rain cuts any route short, he’ll be back in those areas Saturday night.

He is the son of Kevin and Trina Allen.
Another bridge award
The state Department of Transportation and Development’s John James Audubon Bridge recently was honored with the “Best Transportation Project” award by the Texas/Louisiana Engineering News Record. The award is one of 19 “Best of the Best Projects” presented annually in various categories to honor outstanding construction projects nationwide.
