ZACHARY — A Fennwood Drive couple escaped from their burning home Wednesday morning after one of them woke to discover flames in the room, Fire Chief Boyce Smith said.
The single-story home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lynch at 6389 Fennwood Drive was destroyed in the blaze, which was reported at 12:24 a.m. by a neighbor, Smith said.
The cause of the fire remained undetermined and still under investigation Wednesday, the fire chief said.
Firefighters from Baker, Zachary and Central responded to the alarm.
“It took us quite awhile to bring it under control. When we got there, the fire was spread across the whole attic,” Smith said.
The fire chief said the homeowners were not able to call 911 because of the flames, but they awoke neighbors.
“One neighbor said flames already were coming through the roof when they saw the house was on fire,” Smith said.
Although the occupants were not injured, several pets died in the fire, he said.
