ST. FRANCISVILLE — The U.S. Department of Justice has precleared the redistricting plan for the seven-member West Feliciana Parish Police Jury, jury Secretary Sheila Smith said.

The police jury received a letter Thursday announcing the U.S. attorney general has no objection to changes to the police jury’s districts or the parish’s voting precincts. The changes were required because of population shifts noted in the 2010 U.S. census.

The action also applies to the changes proposed for the school board’s districts, which are identical to the police jury’s.

Smith said the police jury’s demographer is working on a map with more detail, such as road names, to provide to the public.

The map may be ready next week, she said.

Qualifying for Oct. 22 elections in the new police jury districts will be Sept. 6-8 at the parish Clerk of Court’s Office.
