ZACHARY - Lightning is suspected as the cause of a fire that destroyed a two-story home outside the city limits Wednesday, Zachary Fire Chief Boyce Smith said.

Smith said neighbors reported hearing several lightning strikes in the Plainsland Drive area off East Plains-Port Hudson Road before the fire was reported about 3:15 p.m. by the occupant of the home.

“We saw several lightning strikes as we were on our way to the fire,” said Smith.

He also reported that a thunderstorm caused high winds and heavy rain in the area.

The fire left a man, woman and their adult son homeless, he said.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the family, Smith said.

The Baker Fire Department assisted Zachary firefighters in extinguishing the blaze.
