West Feliciana Parish President Kevin Couhig says the acquisition, and pending recommissioning, of 22 miles of unused railroad track by the parent company of a pulp and paper mill near St. Francisville will be a major economic boost for the area.
Geaux Geaux Railroad LLC, a subsidiary of Amzak Capital Management, has completed acquisition of the “Zee” railroad line from Illinois Central/Canadian National Railroad, Couhig announced Monday.
The 22 miles of unused track of the Z-line runs from south of Baker through Zachary and Slaughter and ends at KPAQ Industries in southern West Feliciana Parish. Amzak Capital is the parent company of KPAQ Industries.
“This is a big win for (West Feliciana) Parish,” Couhig said in a news release. “This development has the potential for long-lasting, positive impact for KPAQ Industries, one of West Feliciana’s most valuable economic assets.”
The track will be reconditioned before being recommissioned, Couhig said. It eventually will provide transportation of freight and materials for businesses along the route with access to a variety of key metropolitan areas including New Orleans, Chicago and Mobile, Alabama.
“Credit goes to the work of the (parish) Economic Development Board members, both past and present,” Couhig said. “This is an important step toward development of an industrial park and intermodal facility in the southern part of the parish.”
