The Dr. Martin Luther King Committee of Zachary plans its annual back-to-school fair at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Zachary Community Center on Rollins Road.
The event includes games and other activities, donations of school supplies, motivational speakers, fingerprinting and identification cards, refreshments and other prizes.
The public is invited.
Benefit for officer
Friends of West Feliciana Parish sheriff’s Capt. Michael Taylor are organizing a “Country Fair for a Country Boy” all day on Saturday at the Elm Park Rodeo Arena.
The benefit includes a rodeo, trail ride, lunch, food, music and children’s activities.
Taylor, captain of the Sheriff’s Office uniform patrol division, was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer and the benefit will help defray the costs of his treatment in Little Rock, Ark.
Organizers advise visitors to bring lawn chairs.
Clinton market time
The heat won’t beat the assortment of products, crafts, and produce at the Clinton Community Market from 8 a.m. to about 1 p.m. Saturday.
View the National Landmark Courthouse and Lawyer’s Row by horse-drawn buggy and check out the local honey, produce, jams and jellies, bird houses, iron pots and other merchandise offered by area vendors.
Civil War muster
Audubon State Historic Site on La. 965 in West Feliciana Parish presents a program from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday on the 165th New York Infantry, also called Duryea’s Zouaves.
The unit fought in most of the major Louisiana battles, and its soldiers dressed in the colorful flashy red and blue uniforms patterned after French North African troops.
The program will include a costumed park ranger demonstrating a black powder weapon, and talking about both the uniform and camp life of the unit.
Port Hudson State Historic Site on U.S. 61 in East Feliciana Parish presents its monthly Civil War firepower demonstration from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
Port Hudson staff and
volunteers will conduct demonstrations with Civil War-era reproduction weapons including cannons, muskets, rifles, carbines and pistols.
Lane Regional Medical Center’s Diabetes Support Group meets from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Zachary hospital.
Patients with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes are invited to attend, along with family, friends and others in a support role for patients.

Slaughter keeps rating
The Property Insurance Association of Louisiana this week notified the Slaughter Volunteer Fire Department it will retain its Class 3 fire insurance rating in the Slaughter fire protection district.
