BAKER - Police are investigating the shooting death of a Baton Rouge man whose body was found Thursday morning on the grounds of the Baker Civic Club on North Magnolia Drive, Police Chief Mike Knaps said.

Knaps said Abelardo Domingo Pampo, 43, of Mavis Drive in south Baton Rouge, died of an apparent gunshot wound. An autopsy is scheduled Friday.

Baker police received a call about 4:45 a.m. that a body was found near a body of water known as the Little League Pond.

Residences line the opposite side of the street, but police declined to say who reported finding the body. The pond and park are a short distance from La. 19.

A pickup believed to belong to a member of Pampo’s family was parked nearby, Assistant Police Chief Randall Dunaway said.

Police had no motive for the killing and no suspects, Dunaway said Thursday afternoon.

“There are a lot of unanswered questions. We have a dead body with no explanation of why it’s here,” the assistant chief said.

Anyone having information about the shooting is asked to call Baker police at (225) 775-6000.
