CLINTON - The East Feliciana Parish School Board appointed Clay Howell, of Jackson, to represent his late father’s School Board district on an interim basis.
Henry C. Howell IV, who was serving his third term on the board, died Friday night at age 59 and was buried earlier on Tuesday.
“We thank God for Mr. Howell,” board President Michael Bradford said during Tuesday night’s board meeting, adding that the retired teacher and coach “dedicated his entire life to education and the betterment of his community.”
The board also set a special primary election for the District 3, Division 2 seat for Oct. 22, with a runoff, if needed, on Nov. 19.
Qualifying for the election will be Sept. 6-8.
The election winner will be able to serve a little more than three years of Henry Howell’s unexpired term.
East Feliciana Clerk of Court David Dart administered the oath of office to Clay Howell.
Other business taken up by the board included:
SEEKING BIDS: The board voted to advertise for bids for improvements to the heating and air conditioning systems at the Jackson School Complex and East Feliciana Middle School and contract with a heating and air conditioning engineer.
As a second priority, the board also will ask for bids on roofing work at the central office building, modular buildings at Slaughter Elementary School and cafeteria ceiling tiles at Clinton Elementary.
Superintendent Douglas Beauchamp announced that Chase Bank has agreed to purchase $820,000 in federally subsidized bonds for the work, and the board set a special meeting for 5 p.m. Thursday to adopt the necessary bond resolutions.
