The Zachary Fire Department, working with the state Fire Marshal’s Office, will donate and install smoke detectors in Zachary homes for people who do not have them or cannot install them for some reason.
A grant application is available online at the fire marshal’s website, http://sfm.dps.louisiana.gov, under the Operation Save A Life tab. Anyone needing smoke alarms in their residence may turn in the application, or pick up one, at the Zachary fire station. The installation work will begin after the holidays.

Band at inauguration
The West Feliciana High School band will be in the Washington, D.C., neighborhood on Jan. 21 for a music festival sponsored by the University of Maryland, and now, courtesy of Sen. David Vitter, R-La., the group will have 67 reserved seats to watch President Barack Obama take the oath of office for a second term, band Director Kelvin Jones said.
Sandy Hook support
Among the many tributes flooding into Newtown, Conn., were 150 works of student art from West Feliciana High School dubbed “Fleur de Hearts,” a design incorporating the school logo, a fleur-de-lis, and traditional heart shapes. Art teacher Killen G. Williams said art is a common form of therapy, useful in this case for students both at his school and Sandy Hook Elementary School.
