Light the night
Now through Jan. 7, the city's holiday LED light show in the historic district, featuring thousands of blinking and twinkling lights synchronized to Christmas tunes, is available for motorists to drive through.
From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., set the radio to 105.9 FM when entering to hear the music as your family experiences the lights.
Lights in the wild
And to tackle lights on foot, don't forget ZooLights at the BREC Zoo runs through Dec. 30 but is closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Admission is 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the grounds closing at 9 p.m.
The milelong trail has more than 50 illuminated displays. Special activities include Safari Santa on Dec. 15-16, ornament crafting on Dec. 22-23 and Ugandan Kids Choir performances at 6 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. Dec. 23.
Admission is $5 for adults and teens, $4 for seniors and $3 for children ages 2 to 12 and for Friends of the Zoo members.
FAO Schwarz toys event
Stage Store, 5460-A Main St., Zachary, is one of 15 stores in the nation hosting a family-friendly event with FAO Schwarz toys from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16.
Santa or one of his elves will read “Return to Wonder–Toys on Tour,” an exclusive FAO Schwarz story book, only available at these events. An exclusive collection of FAO Schwarz toys, including the Giant Dance Mat Piano, Ride On Roadster and a life-size bear, will be available for purchase.
Activities including arts and crafts stations. A one-of-a-kind coloring book to take home will be available, as well as a photo booth and a chance to win an FAO-branded 4-foot teddy bear.
Stage’s exclusive FAO Schwarz-branded plush Bears that Care will be on sale. Proceeds benefit the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.
Be sure to remember the Zachary Chamber of Commerce's campaign during your holiday shopping. Participating shops have cards shoppers can have stamped for every $10 in purchases through Dec. 19. Completed cards can be dropped off at the Zachary chamber, 4633 Main St., by 4 p.m. Dec. 19 to be entered in a drawing for gift cards.
Make a card
The Zachary Branch of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library will have materials set out from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Wednesday, Dec. 20, for children ages 5 to 11 to make Christmas cards for Zachary's nursing home residents. No registration is needed. The event will last as long as the supplies do.
In addition to Christmas, people are getting excited about the release of the latest Star Wars movie. Joining the fun, the Zachary Branch of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library is having a Star Wars Galaxy Slime event from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Dec. 27 for children ages 8 to 11.
After listening to and browsing through "Star Wars: A Galactic Pop-Up Adventure" by Matthew Reinhart, participants will create various colors of slime with dashes of glitter. Each child will receive a portion of the finished product to take home. Registration is required as there are limited spots.
